Google Is Offering Phone Calls via Gmail

Google entered a new business beyond Internet search on Wednesday with a service within Gmail to make phone calls over the Web to landlines or cellphones.

The service will thrust Google into direct competition with Skype, the Internet telephone company, and with telecommunications providers. It could also make Google a more ubiquitous part of people’s social interactions by uniting the service for phone calls with e-mail, text messages and video chats.
“It’s one place where you can get in touch with the people that you care about, and how that happens from a network perspective is less important,” said Charles S. Golvin, a telecommunications analyst at Forrester Research.
Gmail has offered voice and video chat for two years, but both parties must be at their computers. Google said the new service would work well for people in a spot with poor cellphone reception or for those making a quick call from their desk.
After Gmail users install a voice and video chat plug-in to their browsers, they can make a call using their computer’s microphone and speakers or a headset. Calls to numbers in the United States and Canada will be free at least through the end of the year. International calls range from 2 cents a minute to many countries to 98 cents a minute to call Cuba.
Skype, which was founded in 2003, lets people call phone numbers in the United States and Canada for 2.1 cents a minute or make unlimited calls for $3 a month. For $14 a month, Skype users can make unlimited calls to people in 40 countries.

Loving it...

Will post pictures soon....

FRIDAY THE 13TH

So you forgot that it was Friday the 13th? Sorry for the reminder.
Not that it should make any difference. Right?

Whether you believe in superstitions or not almost everyone you know takes note when it’s Friday the 13th and is more careful crossing the road, pouring hot coffee or walking down the stairs.
Silly or not it is all in the name of warding off what bad luck might come their way. The Irish are big believers in this kind of caution.
On Friday the 13th some people even take to their beds or refuse to leave the house. Believe it or believe it not this behavior is actually a diagnosed phobia of Friday the 13th called Paraskevidekatriaphobia.
It’s not certain where the superstition about Friday the 13th comes from but one of the most common theories is that there were 13 people at the Last Supper and Christ died on Good Friday, hence Friday the 13th. There are also Spanish, Norse and Old English theories but this is one of the most quoted.
There’s not much you can do about Friday the 13th but there are some old Irish superstitions you can take note of to avoid some bad luck. You never know when they might come in handy to spare yourself a little extra bad luck.
Superstitions on Death
·         If you trip and fall in a graveyard you will most likely die by the end of the year.
·         If you meet a funeral on the road you must turn and walk with the funeral party for at least four steps to warn off bad luck.
·         If you open your front door and are greeted by a magpie and it looks at you. Then there is absolutely not thing you can do. This is a sure sign of death.
Animal Superstitions
·         A black cat crossing your path is very bad luck. To counteract this make a triangle shape using your thumbs and forefingers and spit at the cat through the hold. This method will also work when you accidentally walk under a ladder.
·         If a rooster comes to the threshold of your house and crows then you can expect visitors.
·         If you see three magpies on the road it is very unlucky but if you see two of them on your right-hand side then that it’s good luck.
·         If you kill a robin redbreast you will never have any good luck ever again.
·         If the first lamb of the year is black then someone in the family will die within a year.
·         If you meet a magpie, a cat or a woman with a limp while you’re on a trip it is bad luck.
·         Never ask a man going fishing where he is going.
·         If you find a horse shoe and nail it to the door it will bring good luck. This will not work if the shoe is bought or given as a gift by someone else.
Random Superstitions
·         It is not safe to pick up an unbaptized child unless you make the sign of the cross.
·         If you stand up and your chair falls over you’re in for bad luck.
·         If you own a four-leafed clover you will have good luck in racing, and witchcraft will have no power over you. However the rules are that you must always have it with you, you cannot pass it on to another owner and under no circumstances should you show it to anyone.
·         If the palm of your hand itches you’re going to come into some money. If it’s your elbow you will be changing beds. If your ear feels hot someone is talking about you. If it’s your nose that itchy you are going to have a fight with the person nearest to you. To remedy this punch them in the arm and shake them by the hand. Fight over!
·         Handing someone a knife is bad luck. Always put it on the table in front of them never in their hand.
·         If you get your shirt wet while you’re washing the dishes you will marry a drunk.

Perseid Meteor Shower will visible on August 12-13th 2010

The Meteor Shower August 2010 is expected to happen this late night of August 11, 2010. So if you happen to be amazed by how the universe showcase its beauty, you might wanna mark your calendar for this great day.Meteors, or shooting stars, have already started streaking across the skies this week, but the peak is set for the late-night hours of Wednesday and the predawn hours of Thursday, and again late-night Thursday and predawn Friday, according to several websites devoted to the annual event.
Let’s just hope that clouds or rain will not get in the way of the view. Astronomers have calculated that theMeteor Shower August 2010 can be seen on Wednesday night up to the dawn of August 13, 2010. Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to have an astounding 60 plus meteors to light up the skies each hour.
The Perseids begin to rise in early August and meteor showers have their peak activity between August 12 and August 13, 2010. There are about 50 meteors per hour to be expected. The comet of origin of the Perseids meteor is 109P/Swift-Tuttle and they radiate from the constellation Perseus.
A small 1-inch (2.5-cm) wide meteor caused the fireball when it met a fiery demise Aug. 3 while streaking through Earth’s atmosphere, according to officials at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The fireball was observed by sky-watching cameras operated by the space center.
“It’s a very good start to this year’s Perseid meteor shower, which will peak on the night of Aug. 12-13 between midnight and dawn,” explained NASA spokesperson Janet Anderson in a statement from the space center.
Perseid Meteor Shower, 2010 Perseid Meteor Shower
The fireball occurred at about 9:56 p.m. local time and was low in the sky when it entered Earth’s atmosphere about 70 miles (112.6 km) above the town of Paint Rock. It appeared about 9.5 degrees above the horizon. For comparison, your fist held at arm’s length is equal to roughly 10 degrees of the night sky.
NASA observations found the meteor to be hurtling through the atmosphere at a phenomenal 134,000 mph (215,652 kph).

The best way to view a meteor shower

If you live near a brightly lit city, drive away from the glow of city lights and toward the constellation from which the meteors will appear to radiate.
Driving south may lead you to darker skies, but the glow will dominate the northern horizon, where Leo rises. Perseid meteors will appear to “rain” into the atmosphere from the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast around 11 p.m. in mid-August.
“The Perseid shower is the most popular meteor shower of the year because it’s at the best time of year (summer) and it has some of the highest hourly rates of any annual shower,” said Dr. Peter Bias, an economics teacher at Florida Southern College in Lakeland and avid meteor shower observer.
Meteors can be seen as early as 10 p.m. (today) but not very many. This year the maximum should occur on the morning of Aug. 12, so evening meteors can be seen on Aug. 11 or Aug. 12 because the shower actually lasts for about two days at high strength.

Armenian Tukalik

I made yesterday tukalik... its a fried dough.. I had mine without sugar , and with feta cheese.
Yum!

I made it with half of whole wheat flour and the other half regular....

this is how you make it ..

1 cup flour
1 egg
1½ tsp. Baking Powder
½ tsp. salt
¾ cup water
1 qt. veg. oil
Mix all ingredients thoroughly except oil. Heat oil in a 2-quart saucepan. Oil must be hot. Test by dropping a small amount of batter in hot oil. It should turn golden brown quickly. Drop batter using a tablespoon for each ball of dough, frying about 5 at a time. Remove each one as it turns golden brown like a doughnut and drain on paper towels. Cool to lukewarm and sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with syrup or honey.

Coronal Mass Ejection

NASA announced the discovery of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on August 1, 2010. The CME resulted from a class C3 solar flare and was aimed towards Earth. The coronal mass ejection should reach Earth tonight and last through the morning. The CME will cause a higher than normal possibility of aurora, also called northern lights, activity on the evening of August 3 and the morning of August 4. That means that millions across the US tonight will get a great show in the sky! The farther north you live in the US the better chance to see the northern lights tonight.
